Why Phonics Works: What the Science of Reading Tells Us

Children who learn these patterns explicitly and in a logical sequence gain the tools to decode any word — even words they've never seen before.
Research consistently shows that systematic, explicit phonics instruction produces better reading outcomes than whole-language or "balanced literacy" approaches that rely on guessing from context, memorizing sight words, or using picture clues. - Assess early and often. Screening tools like DIBELS or AIMSWEB can identify at-risk readers before they fall too far behind.
- Teach phonemic awareness explicitly. Don't assume children will pick it up naturally. Dedicate time each day to listening for and manipulating sounds.
- Provide decodable texts. Early readers need books that match the phonics patterns they've been taught — not books that require guessing.
